BBC WORLD SERVICE INTERNATIONAL RADIO PLAYWRITING COMPETITION 2011






About the Competition


Applicants are invited to write a radio play of approximately 60 minutes in length, on a subject of their choice. The play must be the original, unpublished work of the person or persons submitting it.
The competition is open to any writer who is not normally a resident of the United Kingdom. The play must be written in English but can be translated by a third party (we are not able to offer any assistance with translation costs) Translated work must be identified as such, and the translator must be credited.


PRIZES
  • £2500 sterling for the overall winning playwright of the best play written with English as a first language and a trip to London to see the play being recorded and to attend a prize-giving evening.
  • £2500 sterling for the overall winning playwright of the best play written with English as a second language and a trip to London to see the play being recorded and to attend a prize-giving evening.
  • A prize of a digital or short wave radio for the best radio play to be written from each of the following geographical areas: The Americas; Europe; Africa and the Middle East; South Asia; Russia and the Caucasus; Asia and Pacific.
  • BBC goodie bags for all writers whose plays reach the judges' final shortlist.

I am the next-generation antivirus: Fighting HIV/AIDS through Responsible Choices” online video contest for young people

In an effort to increase awareness on HIV/AIDS prevention among the Filipino youth, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) National Commission of the Philippines and the University of the East College of Education (UE CoEd), have launched the World AIDS Day 2010 Video Contest.

Still on its maiden run, this event is an excellent opportunity for high school students to promote positive values and beliefs towards the prevention of HIV/AIDS, which has been described as “hidden and growing” in the Philippines.

With the theme “I am the next-generation antivirus: Fighting HIV/AIDS through Responsible Choices”, the contest gives teenagers an opportunity to promote the cause through the use of the Internet (named one of the most popular after-school activities in the 2006 McCann-Erickson Youth Study) and multimedia.
Youngsters can showcase their talents in producing short videos by uploading their original, theme-related works to YouTube, the largest and most popular video-sharing community.

With its wide reach and worldwide juvenile following, YouTube is the most fitting avenue for this advocacy.
HIV/AIDS is a dreaded disease that is slowly gaining ground, with no signs of abating, mostly because of the difficulty to detect the illness due to commonplace early symptoms, and because of complicated management issues due to its complex nature and delicate transmission.

Hard-hit are the third-world countries just like the Philippines, with higher statistics and more casualties because of lack of awareness and lack of access to medication and treatment.

Worse, youth ages 15-24 have been identified as the age group with the highest risk of contracting the disease.
This underlines a greater need for vigilance, advocacy and support, especially among the young, and this activity aspires to do just that.

The contest is open to young adults attending public and private schools in Manila, one of the top five cities with the highest incidence of AIDS in the Philippines.

Two winners will be named: the Critic’s Choice award will be chosen by a 3-member jury panel (one of whom is a member of the PLHIV community), while the People’s Choice will be given to the video with the most number of online votes. Winners will each be receiving a P10,000.00 prize.

Deadline for submission of entries will be on November 15, 2010. Winners will be announced and awarded during the World AIDS Day on December 1, 2010 at the University of the East, C.M. Recto Ave., Manila.

International Youth Conference “Youth Awareness of Climate Change”

Background

The program will focus on the discussion of climate environment issues covering from the Copenhagen Summit, youth involvement and initiatives as well as the scheme Pro-Poor Conservation.
It aims to inspire young people and community the importance of working together and sharing each other the alternatives policies and programs to reduce global emission and to raise awareness on the climate change among the youth. 

During the program, participants will formulate some recommendations for policy makers, international and government Institutions, and other stakeholders. The recommendation can be implemented through the action plan to be conducted and organized by youth, NGO, Governmental and International Organizations. The Conference could create a strategic action and recommendation toward related government institutions and regional/ international organizations. 

The International Youth Conference is organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Indonesia in collaboration with the University of Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta, the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia.

The Conference will be conducted from November 7 to 12, 2010 at the Wanagama Resort, Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Participant’s Eligibility
  • Must be 18 to 30 years old
  • those who are interested in climate change, environment issues and youth development

  • Willingness to participate in the discussions and activities

Expenses

     The Organizer will provide accommodation and local transport to all participants from all participating countries. The international airfare travel expenses must be paid by each participating country or organization.

2010 RP-Korea Youth Exchange

South Korea 
December 1-7, 2010


Background
The National Youth Commission (NYC) will be sending delegates to visit South Korea from December 1 to 7, 2010. This is part of the bilateral agreement between the NYC and the National Council of Youth Organizations in Korea (NCYOK).

Venue and Date
          The event will be held in the South Korea from December 1 to 7, 2010.

Participant’s Eligibility
  • Filipino citizen
  • Must be 18 to 35 years old
  • Must be able to communicate reasonably well in English
  • Willingness to participate in the discussions and activities
  • Must be physically fit to travel
  • Must have valid passport six months before the departure date of the program. Applicants without passport details will not be considered.

  • Photocopy of the passport  information and emergency contact page
  • Original copy of employment certificate for the employees and school certificate for the students
  • Photocopy of Birth Certificate (NSO authenticated)
Expenses
          Interested parties will shoulder their own airfare, travel tax, travel insurance and domestic transportation. Expenses in Korea such as food, hotel accommodation, and local transportation will be provided by the Organizer, NCYOK.

JAPAN-EAST ASIA NETWORK OF EXCHANGE FOR STUDENTS AND YOUTHS (JENESYS) PROGRAMME

The National Youth Commission in conjunction with the Japan International Cultural Center (JICC) of the Embassy of Japan and the Japan International Cooperation Center (JICE), is now inviting applicants for Student Ambassadors and Supervisors to the “10-day Visit to Japan Programme” as part of the Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths (JENESYS) Programme.

The JENESYS Programme, funded by the Japanese Government and in partnership with the ASEAN Secretariat, is to deepen understanding of the different facets of the Japanese society including politics, diplomacy, economics and culture and to form the basis of future vision and construct firm solidarity among Asian countries which will promote mutual understanding of the future generation of ASEAN and East Asia Summit member countries.

II. QUALIFICATION OF STUDENT AMBASSADORS
  1. The Qualification of Student Ambassador (referred to as Youth in the Operational Guidelines for the Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths (JENESYS) Programme 2009/2010) is stated in the abovementioned guideline provided by JICE;
  2. Filipino, single, must be between 16 to 18 years old, on or before April 1, 2011(must be born between April 2, 1993 and April 2, 1995);
  3. Of good moral character;
  4. Must be currently enrolled in a college or a university with a Graded Weight Average (GWA) of 2.25 or 85% equivalent, with no failing marks in the preceding semester;
  5. Physically and mentally fit to travel;
  6. Must be a first time traveler to Japan and/or must not have been a grantee or recipient of any NYC funded international travel or Japanese Government grant;
  7. Must be knowledgeable of the history, geography, culture and arts, and the current issues on the Philippines, and fairly knowledgeable in those of Japan and other East Asia countries;
  8. Must be an officer or an active member of a youth organization for at least one (1) year immediately preceding the date of application;
  9. Must be willing to be an active NYC and JICC volunteer after the program to continue to promote the learnings about Japan and the Japanese culture gained from the JENESYS Programme;
  10. Area representation would be based on the place of the college or university enrolled in;
III. APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENT AMBASSADORS
  1. Two (2) copies of the NYC application forms with passport sized pictures with white background attached to each form (all original, no scanned pictures)
  2. Two (2) copies of JENESYS Entry Form with one face photo sized 45mm x 45mm
  3. Two (2) photocopies of Birth Certificate (from the National Statistics Office-NSO)
  4. Two (2) photocopies of passport, if there is a passport already (page of face photo and personal information.  If expired but extended, with a page that states extension as well)
  5. An essay which states the applicants’ a) Reasons for applying; b) Expectations of the programme; c) If chosen, the preparations the applicant will undertake prior to departure; d) environmental situations in the Philippines and his/her views and proposals for its improvement. (Maximum of 100 words, per question)
  6. Two (2) copies of a resume, not more than three (3) pages
  7. Two (2) copies of Certificate of Good Moral, issued by the college or university (1 original and 1 photocopy) and stating that the applicant has a Graded Weight Average (GWA) of 2.25% or 85% equivalent, with no failing marks in the preceding semester.
  8. Completed NYC Volunteer form
  9.  A certification from school or organization that the applicant is an officer or active member.

2011 - Internship Opportunities at Global Citizens for Sustainable Development (GCSD)

Global Citizens for Sustainable Development (GCSD) is a registered not-for-profit and non-governmental-organization based in Bangalore, India. GCSD is a youth based organization and believes that youth have the potential in influencing the world for the better of the society. Interns will be involved with the following projects:

I. Three/Six months Internship Program (1st January – 31st March 2011/30th June 2011)

1. Vedike: an eco-residential school and Global Living and Learning Center - Doing research on the migrant workers and their children in Bangalore, green buildings, green technology to be used on the campus and other details of the program.

2. Japan-India Forum – prepare and participate for a one week program in February 2011 with Japanese students visiting India for the Forum. The theme of the Forum and discussions will be on themes such Povety, Gender and Culture (of India) 

3. Global Citizenship Leadership Training Program: Working with a team of experts to 
create a Leadership Training Program module.

4. Preparation of the Summer Programs of GCSD like the WE BUILD 2011 and the Asian Youth Assembly 2011

5. Climate Change campaign in Bangalore.

6. Korea-India Forum – prepare for a 10 days program in July 2011 where about 12 Indians will be going to South Korea for the Forum. 

II. Summer Internship Program (1st July – 31st August 2011)

1. WE BUILD 2011: A 4 credit summer volunteers program of building houses for the poor, teaching English and other life skills module to poor and under-privilege children.

2. Asian Youth Assembly: A gathering of Asian youth participants to discuss key issues (such as: Ethics, Economy, Ecology, Education, Equity) of the region and to work collectively to bring a change in the region.

3. China-India Forum: A gathering of youth and experts on the theme of Sustainable Development from these four countries, discussing strategies and case studies and working on bilateral relationship for better regional cooperation

Qualifications required:

1. Applicants should have very good writing skills as most of these skills will be used for documentation and publications to be produced of the programs to be held during their internships.

2. Applicants should be either studying or should be a recent university graduate interested in Indian culture, global citizenship, social development work and cross-cultural dialogue

3. Applicants must be computer literate (email/internet, web page, lay-out/design, etc) and proficient in English; working knowledge of any Asian language especially Chinese, Japanese and Korean is an advantage.

Conditions of service
1. Interns will serve for specific period of 3/6 and 2 months in summer as mentioned above. 
2. Travel costs will not be provided. Intern will have to travel to India on a tourist visa and it is mandatory that the intern has a valid International Health Insurance during the internship period.
3. Room will be provided for lodging and an additional $100 stipend for expenses towards food, local travel, etc
4. He/She must fulfill his/her duties and abide by the rules and regulations of the program.
5. Interns are expected to work full-time and to carry out the duties assigned to them. Personal travels during the internship especially weekends is discouraged. If the intern wants to travel he/she is requested to make plans before or after the internship period.
